Half-life Charm Bracelet Project...

I receive a lot of really touching, sentimental custom requests from my customers, but it's rare when I get a request that epitomizes the joys of life in such a geekily-fantastical way that I am inclined to share it (and received permission to do so by the said customer).

First - let me start by saying that my customer and I called this the "Half-life Project" and before any one gets bent out of shape, I am aware that "half-life" means this:

We just did not use the term in that way.

This half-life project had to do with the fact that my customer - we'll call him M. has, as of November 20th, 2013, spent over half his life with his wife R - and he felt the need to celebrate this monumental moment by creating her a charm bracelet that had all the important beginning dates - marriage, first, second, third child...and add in all the numbers of days they have spent together.

Let that sink in:  a dude took the time to think all this through - figure out the exact days he has spent with his wife, calculate what exact date that would be, starting planning THREE MONTHS IN ADVANCE to create this perfectly spectacular gift.

Yup. That's right.

I created the charms that represent the kids with a playing card theme and, just by happy accident, the suit I picked for each child really represented the child's personality well.

I love it when a plan comes together!!

Creating pieces like this that are going to be treasured, remembered, and talked about is exactly why I love doing what I do.

It does a heart so good to spread joy, doesn't it?

Mini Snow Globe Pendants...with Ms.Maya

My daughter. Maya, might love doing crafts more than I do.  She wanted to create something for her soccer team as an end-of-season little gift just from her.
E-Crafty is one of my favorite sites to peruse when I want to find something to create with Ms.Maya.  For her soccer buddy project, we decided to make mini snow globe pendants that I'm hoping her teammates will think are pretty cool.
First, let me introduce you to my youngest, little Love, Ms.Maya:
She's a doll, isn't she?  Love her!
Now - gather supplies.
Here's what you need - and you can find all of it at www.ecrafty.com:

We first took the 6mm pearl and glued it underneath the 4mm pearl to shape the snowman.  We used a sharpie to make the eyes and mouth and colored in a black area for the "hat" - on some of them, we drew buttons on the body.
We then glued the whole thing to the bottom of the tiny vials. Use toothpicks to place and secure the snowman to the bottom of the vial - those pearls are SMALL!

Maya had a pretty awesome time making the faces.  We then screwed in the eyelets into the cork stopper and added a drop or two of the epoxy/glue to secure it.

We waited about an hour for all the epoxy to dry.  We used a mason jar and put about two ounces of water (I recommend distilled) and a few drops of glycerin and swirled it all around.

Using a plastic pipette (an eyedropper would have worked well, too) to fill the vials with water to just under the first ridge.

We sprinkled some of the fine silver into the vial (we used Martha Stewart brand silver in Sterling).

We used a few more drops of epoxy around the cork stopper and sealed the vials up.  We waited another little stint of time (30 - 45 minutes) and then ran the chain through.

I had a bunch of fun green, damask pouches hanging around the studio, so we packaged them all up in those.

And here's the final result:

A happy Ms.Maya, some beautiful, handmade treasures for an awesome soccer team, and some super special Mom and Maya time - it's a triple win! :)

I {heart} personalized jewelry...

I know that's probably no surprise at all, but I L O V E personalized jewelry.  Don't get me wrong: I love wearing big 'ol statement pieces sometimes that make people from three miles away "OOH" and "AHHH"...but the pieces that make it onto my being on a daily basis, the ones that get asked about at dinner parties and leave the ask-er (is that a word?) speechless because they are just so darn touched by it all - THAT'S the stuff I love.

This piece was created to commemorate the life and the love of a customer's dog - a little something she can carry with with her (because up until now, she has been carrying Dakota's dog tags around with her) to keep Dakota close to her always.  Something that can remind her of that incredible love and bond between animal and human.

The grief you feel when he/she is gone...inexplicable.

I am so beyond honored to create something that can provide just a little bit of comfort...it makes me feel so amazingly blessed.

Friday Funky Creation ~ Message to Me Pendant ~

I love Friday Funky Creation time!  It's something that I've done for quite some time, but never documented.
I take Fridays to play a bit - it's a mix of research and development and a simple exercise in clearing the creative zone in my head.  Having a handful of hours to decompress from a hectic week of production, marketing, meetings and what-not's has proved to result in happier (and more sane) business owner...and oftentimes these little excursions result in a brand new piece.
For this FFC, I wanted to create a 'little note to myself' type of piece - but I didn't want it to look like a post-it...I wanted it to be clearly distinguishable as a letter, or note.  I chose the shape of an envelope and wanted it to hang a bit askew for interest.
The whole point of this piece was to have a word on there that I say to myself quite a bit - which is, "enough".  That word holds so much weight.  I like it because it reminds me to be okay with just saying, "okay, I've had enough" of whatever (re: negative words that I say to myself, a friendship that doesn't hold positive value any longer, or cupcakes :) )  It also is a word that I use to remind myself that I am enough. Just as I am, imperfections and all. I am enough.
I wanted the word to be handwritten - it adds to the organic aesthetic of the pendant and I thought it was fitting.
Here's the finished piece:
What do you think?
If you need a message to carry with you, let me know - I'd love to create a piece like this for you! ana@prettypeacock.com

Creativity and Intelligence...

Back in 2011, Psychology Today's Jonathon Wai published an article asking, "If you are creative, are you also intelligent?" I thought the article, found here, was pretty interesting.  There's been all this talk about how countries such as China and Japan are adopting more of the "American" sense of education so that their students are encouraged to be more creative, rather than just adhere to the 'rote learning' that Asian countries are known for.

Bill Gates was quoted in the article and said (something along these lines) that considering that Japan creates some of the most creative, imaginative video games in the world...there has to be some creative folks lurking about (not to mention that Japan = anime, Pokemon, Yugi-Oh!...and all sorts of other creatively awesome good stuff).

I am drawn to this whole idea of creativity and intelligence because being raised by parents from the Asian continent, I was held to incredibly high academic standards, but being creative (drawing, writing stories, playing music, singing songs) was kind of expected.  That makes me think that most Asian parents do the same thing (no science or statistical backing on this claim at all).
What I truly believe is this quote from Einstein: Creativity is Intelligence having fun.
Now I'm just hoping that MineCraft is considered a creative activity, because if so, our children are practicing this in spades. :)

Pretty Peacock Pick of the Week ~ Storybook Pendants

School is {finally} starting this coming Wednesday for my two children.  The start of the school year always has me a bit nostalgic for their babyhood.

My oldest is about ready to start 5th grade - and that sounds so crazy to even WRITE, let alone say aloud!  I caught a glimpse of him in the rearview mirror the other day and, I swear, I saw him as a toddler sitting in his 5-point harness and happily kicking his legs...when in reality, he is almost as tall as I am, has feet that are way bigger, and is super proud of his *almost* tween status.

My youngest is a second grader. She is still my bitty, bitty baby and always will be, darn it all!  Too bad her (becoming-all-too-frequent) sassy tone, definitive style choices, and independence streak dictate otherwise.

I created my Storybook pendants because I needed something to hang on to.  Something substantial, something that clinked when I walked, something that I could look down and be reminded of the two most gloriously monumental days of my life. Ever.

No matter how weird-ed out I become over saying what grade my children are in, or how often I need to hold back laughter as his voice changes, or how many times I have to bite my tongue when she asks me about an outfit choice...I will have this tangible, fiddle-worthy, super meaningful pendant with the dates of their entrance into the world to hang on to.

That's why the Storybook pendants are the Pretty Peacock Pick of the Week.

How do you guys feel about your kids going back to school?

The Personalized Love Letter...

I don't know the last time I wrote a real, true-blue letter. But I'll tell you this: I have kept every letter that was sent to me since I was a kid - no lie.  I have every letter that my now husband, then boyfriend wrote me for the three months we've ever been apart (and that was over 18 years ago). I even have notes that I exchanged in high school.  I am a letter hoarder.

There is something intimate and connecting about a letter.  That's why I had to pair the love I have for letters and my love for lockets together

These little envelope lockets are beyond sweet.  They are small enough to be a perfect (and interesting) addition to layered necklaces - and carry a message that is all your own on the inside.

One of the most popular requests have been to put latitude longitude coordinates - you know I love the geeky-ness of all that!  I also love that people are choosing to put little messages of inspiration, or even just simple declarations of love, for his/her recipient to hang onto.

These pieces are solid sterling silver - and hand stamped characters are on the little 'letter'.

I really love this piece and feel connected with the nostalgia of it all.

Hope you are, too! :)

You can find them here: http://bit.ly/16zsmqe

Tell me what you think of these - and what you would have on it!

TODAY is International Geocaching Day!

Geocaching is super awesome.  It's a way for you to explore literally ANY place - whether you just moved there, visiting, or have lived there for 20 years - and find a new and interesting little cove, pond, cool tree...

Geocaching is, in essence, a treasure hunt. It appeals to the eternal 10 year old inside me just as much as it appeals to the (ahem) mature 36 year old.

Here's the 101 from Geocaching.com :
"Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location."
This doesn't really capture the pure awesomeness of it, though.  It makes you downright giddy to find those cleverly placed tupperware containers (the "cache") and when you open it up - there are cool little toys and trinkets that others have left - and YOU TAKE ONE AND LEAVE ONE!  You take a little trinket-treasure and then leave one, sign the log book, and you move on to the next cache.

We have taken our kids geocaching since they were about 2.  The caches are rated for difficulty so you have an idea of the terrain and how difficult it is to find the cache.

It is INCREDIBLY easy to get started AND it's FREE family entertainment!

Geocaching.com is the best resource I've found so definitely explore that site.
Since geocaching has become so wildly popular, I have created dozens of Latitude Longitude pieces that have lead to locations where the cache had a little note popping the question. I absolutely LOVE the geeky romantic-ness of it all.
It's the perfect day to have my new Latitude Longitude Charm Bracelet on sale!!

Go geocaching today - you will run into a ton of veterans who can show you the ropes.  You'll be hooked in no time!

Happy hunting!

Wednesday Wisdom...

No matter how crappy, irritating, annoying, or awful the situation...things just ease a bit when you're laughing.  You may look insane, but you sure do feel better.

And, really - isn't that all that matters?
Happy Wednesday!!!

The Love Between a Mother and Daughter is Forever...

I have been blessed as a mother.  I get to raise both a son and a daughter and learn the joys and sorrows of raising both genders.

My son is a gloriously intelligent and an absolute sweetheart of a 10 year old.  He's also stubborn, a little too addicted to Minecraft, and a touch bossy.  But, I wouldn't trade him...not just yet, anyway :)

I always thought I wanted a whole brood of boys.  I love football, general rambunctiousness, and being the only Queen of the flock (obviously).  However, when Maya was born, I was head over heels for that little girl.

Now that she is 7 and truly her own little person, I am attached to her in a way that I never expected.  That bond between a mother and daughter is truly unlike any other.

I had to design something that celebrated that bond, without being too over the top.  Something sweet and elegant. Like her.

These Mother & Daughter Pendant sets come in sterling and in 14K gold and I wanted to have them on a presentation card so that if your daughter (or mother) is far away, you could pop it in the mail and everything is explained.

We also create it so that two daughters can be celebrated:

The smaller heart is small enough for a little one to wear - and layers perfectly with other chains if she's a bit older.

There is true meaning, love, and joy in this pendant set. It's something you're both going to hang on to forever - and have so many stories to share.

I've been overwhelmed at how popular these pendant sets have become.  I wanted to add to the collection, so by Fall, there will be pendant sets celebrating sisters, friends, & grandmothers and granddaughters.

I can't wait for this holiday season because receiving (and giving) something like this to someone you share such a special bond with will make the holidays memorable in the very best way.

Clean and Sophisticated - Latitude Longitude Cuff Links

We started our Latitude Longitude Collection many years ago. I'm a huge fan of jewelry that has an air of mystery to it - something that only the wearer and the giver is aware of from the start.  A secret that only the wearer or the giver is inclined to disclose.

Since the inception of the collection, the cuff links have been overwhelmingly welcomed by brides and grooms alike.  The cuff links have provided the perfect finishing touch on a groom's ensemble - that perfectly sentimental bit of awesomeness that the groom can take and pass down along the generations.

The Latitude Longitude cuff links have also been given for anniversary gifts a year - or 50 years - after the big day.

I wanted to simplify the Latitude Longitude Cuff Links by changing the font so it is a little less scripted, and a little more clean.

The clean lines of this typewriter-esque font on the brushed, solid sterling silver really works well together - hopefully like the couple saying their "I do's".

I am privileged enough to hear some amazing stories behind the corresponding coordinates ordered by customers - there have been many stories of boyfriends sending their girlfriends off on scavenger hunts, or geo-cacheing expeditions to find her engagement ring carefully hidden.  Or how a couple met on a research expedition in Antarctica and ended up getting married there, as well (how cool is THAT?!).

I love that the coordinates that are handstamped on these treasures carry deep meaning.  It makes me feel that I was able to immortalize a memory for them in my art.  That makes me feel very blessed to be doing what I am doing.

So, thanks for choosing me - and the flock - to create your special treasures!

Latitude Longitude Charm Bracelet

I love cutesy stuff that doesn't make me gag with the cuteness.

I re-designed our Latitude Longitude You Plus Me charm so that the numbers are more uniform, smaller, and the back has the vintage map compass rose to match the rest of our Latitude Longitude collection.

I also wanted this piece to be connected to a super cool charm bracelet that didn't have any fussy clasps. This one has a toggle clasp, so that it's simple to put on one-handed (or if you have arthritis!).  We even added a sweet, puffed silver heart for that extra bit of lovely detail.

The large links allow you to add on your own charms to commemorate other super special memories from your life.

Each charm is handmade right here in Seattle using recycled sterling silver.

Have an anniversary coming up?  This would make her swooooonnnnn. You may even get some tears.  I promise! :)

Gatsby-esque Statement Jewelry...

Bring on the bling!

The release of The Great Gatsby definitely has people oohing and aahing over the costumes. I am in love with the gemstone encrusted jewelry of that era and had to start creating pieces with a whole lot of glam, sparkle and added in some color just for swooning points.

Statement jewelry is so much fun to wear.  It dresses up perhaps a more stuffy business suit by adding whimsy and decadence with a nice helping of spice to show off your personality.

I love using these pieces as the pop of color - and they are instant mood elevators, too!

I am just about ready to list some pieces, but in the mean time, I have been taking custom requests.  I had a customer request something that had a "sun and sea" color combination...which yielded this pendant and earring set created from fire opal, opal, and aquamarine. (aren't the back of the earrings awesome?)

I had another customer ask for something with chocolate tones, so I came up with a chocolate&cherry color combo:

YAYY for rhinestones and garnet!

These Gatsby-esque statement pieces are going to only be available for the Summer months, so get them while you can!

Contact us if you have special requests (like something to match an outfit for a specific occasion): info@theprettypeacock.com

We look forward to hearing from you!

Splashes of Color for Summertime Bling...

The Pretty Peacock is filled with jewelry that means something to the wearer. It's meant to inspire and motivate you, take you back to a special place or time, remind you of love itself.  I adore the jewelry that has made The Pretty Peacock the special place customers come to to find that piece of jewelry that is going to bring sentimental joy to the wearer.

I also love wearing jewelry that makes you feel daringly glamorous.  I have not designed statement pieces for The Pretty Peacock, yet, but I think my recent little endeavor in expanding my own jewelry wardrobe has left me wanting to create some colorful beauties with giant bling.  I want to create pieces that you are going to want to wear with those Summer dresses just so they catch the sunlight and blind the nearest person (in the very nicest way possible).

Colorful Experiments with The Pretty Peacock

Here's a sampling of some fun, colorful statement pieces that I am definitely going to be wearing this Summer - whether it's with that elegant whatever-I-plan-to-wear to various weddings, to the more casual wear to the local pool with the kids.  I guarantee you I will get a bunch of "ooh's" and "ahh's"...and I love that type of thing (and who doesn't?) ! :)

This royal purple color has me swooning!

This is my favorite little set...

Made this set for my mama! :)
There will be a lot more color this season from TPP...I guarantee you that!  Let me know your thoughts!

Countdown to Mother's Day...The Definition of Family Pendant

I love wearing pendants that have a lot of little parts - especially when each part is packed full of meaning and sentiment.

The Definition of Family Pendant set has so many meaningful parts - each hanging together in harmony on a single chain.

There is a circle charm with a heart that can have the first names of the head of the family, a bar pendant with the dictionary layout of the word "family", a puffed gold heart (so sweet!), and then you can add on as many small initial charms as you like.

This makes such a personal gift - and perfect for those families that haven't finished growing, yet, because you can add on initials as a member is added.

Mothers, grandmothers, godmothers would love the sweet sentiment behind this pendant set.  Makes the perfect gift for Mother's Day!

Find our Definition of Family Pendant set here: http://www.theprettypeacock.com/necklaces/definition-of-family-pendant-set.html
